THE HANSEN FAMILY LOVES … JENNIFER WARD

I just discovered her work by chance when I stopped by at the Swiss Miss Studio and it's stunning! She is the founder of Minor Details and works as a family and child-focused interior design consultant.

THE HANSEN FAMILY LOVES … SWISS MISS!

I was so happy to finally meet Swissmiss-Tina in Person! Her studio is in Brooklyn and absolutely beautiful! She has a great view on the City-skyline and in great neighbours (Jennifer Ward from Minor Details is sharing her studio and Jason Santa Maria is working next door).

THE JANE HOTEL, NEW YORK

While exposing at the ICFF in New York I stayed at the Jane Hotel in the Meatpacking District, right next to High Lane and the Standard Hotel. It was great since all the Parties and Opening Ceremonies were mostly held in the Meatpacking District, too. Completed in 1908, the American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute was designed by William A. Boring, the architect renowned for Ellis Island’s immigrant station.

Originally built as a hotel for sailors with cabin-like rooms, the landmarked hotel was lovingly restored on its centennial in 2008.
In 1912, the survivors of the Titanic stayed at the hotel until the end of the American Inquiry into the ship’s sinking. The surviving crew held a memorial service at the hotel four days after the ship sank. I loved my stay there!

DULUTH CANOE PACK

The Duluth Pack has its humble roots in a poor French-Canadian named Camille Poirer, who made his way west to Duluth, Minesota. Arriving here in 1870 with his "little stock of leather and tools", he began a small shoe store. On December 12, 1882, Camille filed for a patent on a new type of packsack. It was a canvas sack that closed with a buckled flap, had new-fangled shoulder straps in addition to the traditional tumpline, a revolutionary sternum strap and an umbrella holder (for portable shade in this newly cutover country). Known then as the Poirer pack, this northwoods classic is referred to today as the original Duluth Pack.

A Duluth Pack is what the trappers and packers used in Minnesota 120 years ago to transport furs in canoes. It's nothing more than a big canvas pillowcase with a flap and some straps. Kind of like a giant courier bag. The original Duluth Pack had a "tump line" to go over the forehead, but modern man doesn't get enough vitamins to use that, so they use shoulder straps instead.

Since 1882, the Duluth Pack is the original hand made canoe pack, and it's guaranteed for life.

WE LOVE KLUGER TARTES

My most important adress in Paris since I love to host a brunch but hate to make cakes! They recently appeared in the survival guide of Monocle. Their cheesecake is amazing and if you don't find the time to stop by at their atelier, they offer a delivery service in Paris. There are innovative savoury and sweet tarts - I already tried a carrot, mint and lemon tart and a prawn and endive tart.

WE LOVE THE STRONGHOLD

During our last visit to Los Angeles, we totally loved the Stronghold denim workshop.
The store's philosophy is to proudly sell brands with American history that extends at least as far back as World War 2 and earlier.
Stronghold itself was the first denim brand manufactured in Los Angeles, established in 1895.
The brand was resurrected and focuses on selvage denim pants, either made in standard fits, or custom made to measure.

Selvage is the narrow woven edge of denim that is produced on vintage narrow width looms. It is usually white and often has a colored line, called a "ticker", running through it.
Less than 1% of all denim produced world wide is still woven on these "shuttle" looms.

The denim comes from Cone Denim, in North Carolina, the last selvage denim manufacturer in the United States.

The reproduction of this classic brand celebrates the old wolrd worksmanship, slevage fabric and details of the original, to achieve a timeless style, fit and finish.

MARTIN SKELLY'S PLAYLIST PLAYER

A novel concept and beautiful exterior make Martin Skelly’s Playlist Player vinyl emulation system a certified object of desire. The device — which plays back digital files in an apparently Serrato-like manner — attempts to simulate the classic ritual of the vinyl LP.

“There are two parts to the design: the player, and the record box containing five different coloured covers. Once the playlists are chosen and synced to the player with a memory stick, the user customises the outside of the sleeve with artwork of their choice. It could be photos of a memorable night or person or typed and hand drawn tracklists.

Once the record is placed on the player, the music begins and the outer ring of lights illuminates. As the playlists plays rings of light visible through the translucent record move towards the centre of the disc, like a needle tracking on a record. These lights represent time and not the number of tracks, meaning your music must be enjoyed from start to finish with no distractions like the temptation to skip tracks, fast forward or rewind.”

THE HANSEN FAMILY LOVES … CARROTS?

Newcomer French brand of natural perfumes Honoré des Prés have launched their second collection of fragrances following an initial introduction of 5 scents in 2008. Perfumer Olivia Giacobetti is the nose behind all these creations which want to appeal to the-back-to-nature eco-minded customers. This time it's NYC which is the source of inspiration complete with its coffee cups to go. I love the ecofriendly packaging design.

You can get them at Le Bon Marché and Colette.
